Project 2 Dev Diary - 2D Asset Creation

Throughout the duration of the creation of Raffertys Reaping, our expansion to the board game Up Ship Creek, there wasn’t a huge amount of asset creation digitally. Most of the tweaking in the game whether it was the characters, items, hazards or crisis cards they were done by hand written onto placeholder versions. It wasn’t until the second last week of the project that i went through and digitised the crisis cards to take to one of our many play testing sessions. We were lucky enough to have a base template and all that was needed in most cases was to Photoshop the card's text onto the template.

In some situations like our 3rd crisis in our A thread “Heat Wave” it was necessary to create emblems to show what type of status effects would be needed for that crisis. For “Heat Wave” in particular the players needed to place fire status tokens across locations in the ship so the emblem gave a visual representation to that. We also put the emblems on the crisis cards so that players would instantly know what kind of crisis they were about to deal with as soon as they looked at the card.

The only other visual asset created was a temporary mock up for the Corpse Cards we had created for our expansion. We made the mock up version so that the Graphic Design team who were collaborating with us would have an idea of what the card layout would look like. Other than that the project was full of constant iteration and changing physical copies of our mechanics. With the task of making the final art for our game being handed over the the Graphic Design students i'm extremely confident and excited to see what they can make from our ideas.
