Project 3 - 3D Models - From Placeholder to Polished

Even before the brief had been given to us about project 3 our lecturers had told us to look into MagicaVoxel, a voxel based 3D modelling program. As 3D modelling is something i'm striving to get better at this gave me a fantastic opportunity to practice. After spending the weekend making some small assets our project began. Having that experience with the tool already enabled me to create assets quickly which benefitted us by being able to use them in a pitch giving the viewers a better representation of the style we were working towards. These placeholder models for early in the program didn’t have drastic changes but they did progress through the project.

Once our art bible had been written and our design rules from it had been finalised i was given the chance to polish the models into a final product. The first thing we changed was bringing the size of the models down from 15 X 15 X 15 to 13 X 13 X 13 to give a consistent size to the different shaped ingredients while utilising as many of the voxels as possible. Once the size had been determined i was able to add a much higher degree of detail to the models. As can be seen in the Peanut butter and Hazelnut spread models i had shrunk the size down but still added detail like the labels on the bottles, not only the basic shape running around the model but even their logos such as the Hazelnut spread using the black and red voxels for the mouth representing the Nestle logo, and same with the Peanut Butter using the yellow P and B letters to visually represent what the ingredient is even in such a small scale.
