Week 7
What have I accomplished this week as a developer?
This week we got to wrap up our MusicVideoGame LatexBasic for our client Izaac Wilson. This was a massive week where all of the projects loose ends needed tieing up, leaving this kind of work to the final week was problematic but thankfully things came together much smoother than expected. Each member of the team was able to piece their areas together and there was minimal work needed to create a smoother transition between these differently designed areas. Even though each area was designed to be different where the player would transition between industrial, commercial and residential areas, the carefully chosen aspects which would interact with our core mechanic of lighting things up didn’t detract from the overall experience and in fact tied the entire experience together. Upon releasing this project up on our Itch.io page which can be found here the game was picked up and played by two youtubers. The Wobbly Foot gamer and Avation. As you would have seen on an earlier blog my team now known as Dragon Drop games got recognition by Warp Door and PC Gamer. Whereas this is the first student project which was able to reach these heights. It is really satisfying as an upcoming developer to get this kind of recognition and all it does it spur me on to create more games at this level and further push my personal brand.
What have I learned this week about development and being a developer?
Starting next week we are into the fourth and final project of this trimester, although this project doesn’t officially start till Monday, I think it's a necessary move to get some ideas and brainstorming done to get up and running in the project quickly. After doing a great deal of research into “Home” games and checking out games from previous trimesters, I really wanted to produce a game around a very particular feeling. Not only did I want the player to get a feeling of ‘Home’ but I wanted them to feel a longing for home or better known as home sickness. After brainstorming ideas with the team we came up with a concept around the idea of how home changes and this was after actually going around the table and asking each member of the team what home meant to them. This was fascinating as each of us had such a different idea of home but even with these differences were able to come together to find a commonality and cohesive idea. Mixing various peoples feelings about a certain topic together wasn’t a process iI had even thought about in previous game design processes. However it’s a type of idea concepting which I believe in the right team will be an incredibly powerful tool especially when aiming the game towards evoking a particular feeling.
