Studio 2 - Week 09

What have I accomplished this week as a developer?

This week was a stressful one, as we are drawing to the pointy end of the trimester there are things due almost every week. Adding to that we had a showcase of Crowd Control at Netherworld at the indie Artscade showcase. It was great to share the moment with the team and other members of my class and it was a privilege to showcase alongside famous developers in a professional manner. It also brought us great feedback about Crowd Control and has got as working hard on some aspects of the game before our final release at Synergy. It has given me the chance to work on things I have not had the chance to before, especially Audio, which will not only benefit the projects but all the projects down the line. I have been messing around with Bosca Ceoil trying to make some tracks and it's been both rewarding and fun.

What have I learned this week about development and being a developer?

This week in the preparations for the showcase I was tasked with making some of the particle effects for Crowd Control, I had some nice previous experience with Unity’s particle system but had never had the chance to make some for a 2D game before. It was a great learning experience and my previous work still did come in handy getting everything running smoothly and triggering at the right times. They were subtle additions to the game such as when you hit the spotlight the glass would shatter and fall to the ground, or if the beer projectile hits you the froth in the top of the cup flies out. The other major news as part of the project was learning the true value of a project manager. The whole team are friends and we didn’t designate a project manager from the beginning so with hectic project 3’s and side projects the team wasn’t working on Crowd Control enough to have it ready for the showcase in the prior weeks. Until Darryl the legend stood up and took charge, within the span of 3 days our game became more than just a one week make a thing game and even since then the work that's been added has all been because of his guidance and dedication. Really looking forward to showing off the final build at Synergy wrapping up all of the work we have put into it.
